The most famous of all the latin phrases, Memento Mori essentially means “remember you must die”.
Now at first, that might seem a little morbid, reminding ourselves that we must die. But the intention of the phrase is quite the opposite.
Memento Mori is meant to remind us of how precious life is - that it’s not eternal and we can't guarantee every moment. When we keep that in mind, we are able to see how important it is to seize the day, embrace life with open arms, and live with no regrets.
We can choose to spend our life knowing that with each new day comes a fresh beginning. A new opportunity for us to find meaning in our lives and explore our purpose.
My hope is that this reminder makes you reflect on what brings meaning to your life. Is it family? Giving back to those in need? Pursuing your dream career, or being successful?
Marcus Aurelius had a great quote on this:
