I LOVE the story behind this year's Friends & Family design - it's called Halcyon F&F. Here's why:
In ancient Greek mythology, Halcyon was the daughter of Aeolus, the god of the winds. She married a mortal king named Ceyx, and the two were deeply in love. So much so that they used to jokingly refer to one another as 'Zeus' and 'Hara'.
This angered the real Zeus so much that one day, when Ceyx was on a journey at sea, Zeus made a terrible storm arise and Ceyx drowned.
As that happened, Morpheus, the god of sleep, allowed Ceyx to appear to Halcyon in a dream to bid her farewell. Devastated by the loss, Halcyon threw herself into the sea in grief. Out of compassion, the gods transformed both of them into kingfisher birds who, every December, would nest near the sea.
The days these 'lovebirds' would nest became known as the Halcyon days because the sea would magically be calmed while they were there.
I love this story because today, Halcyon is a word that's used to denote times of peace - more specifically a time of peace in the midst of adversity.
That is awesome.
So as we think about the coming new year, and what sort of circumstances we're trying to speak into existence, I think halcyon is the perfect fit.
A cool sidenote here is that this specific colorway was made by taking all the different stunning colors of Kingfishers (including the super rare South Philippine Dwarf Kingfisher) and mixing them together to create a collage that's absolutely stunning.
The Halcyon F&F single is limited to just 5,000 pieces this year and will be available for free with a purchase of $100 or more. I hope you all love it as much as I do!
