She absolutely loves the outdoors and can always find things to appreciate in nature. From hiking in Yosemite to sitting in the backyard, you can always count on her to find something to admire wherever she is. She’ll often say things such as, “Look at how intricate that flower is, isn’t that incredible?” or “Isn’t it amazing how the spots on a butterfly can be so symmetrical?” To be honest, I used to laugh when she would say things like that, as I felt it was almost silly. Don’t get me wrong, I love the outdoors, but she seemed to have this deeper appreciation and connection with it that I just couldn’t understand. Through watching my mom’s appreciation for the world around her, I began to realize something: She appreciated the things I took for granted.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eI began to think more about this and the way she viewed the world. We were never promised our five senses - our arms, legs, fingers, or toes, but here we are. We don’t all have everything, but we all have something: we are breathing. Our heart is beating, our brain is processing, our body is functioning. Although it may seem silly to marvel at the intricacy of nature, or even that my fingers are moving to type this story, it just goes to show there are blessings everywhere. They are reminders that no matter what we encounter in this world, there are always things to be grateful for. They are extremely close.  Watching my wife deal with the pain of constant vigil for Robin is heartbreaking.  It consumes a lot of her thoughts on almost a daily basis and it crushes her that she is mostly powerless to help her friend with the extreme depression they are feeling and expressing relentlessly.  Knowing what Robin is going through, I can completely understand how they could feel hopeless.  Several lost jobs, one of them an entire career, divorce, child custody battles over a newborn, losing a parent, legal issues, mental health problems, substance abuse issues stemming from these things )and contributing to them)... it's a lot. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eRobin has, on multiple occasions, spoken about this despair and how it might be solved through an extreme action. There have been several interventions by my wife and by law enforcement, an ongoing issue for almost as long as I can remember.  While it has been really hard for my wife to constantly attend to this, I know for sure that if she were to lose Robin she would be absolutely devastated. Robin’s child would grow up without a parent, their mother would never forgive herself. To say they'd be missed is a massive understatement - they're incredibly important to a lot of people, even though they don’t think they are. To put it more clearly - Robin matters….and so do you.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy hope for you, when you wear this strap, is that it will serve as a reminder that no matter how low you are feeling, you\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eare\u003c\/em\u003e\u003cspan\u003e \u003c\/span\u003eimportant and people need you. I’d like to believe that the reason is that we can’t accomplish much about worrying other than stressing ourselves out. When we dwell on something that’s already happened or hasn’t even happened yet, we’re setting ourselves up for mental exhaustion, sadness, or possible guilt. We can’t control situations that are said and done. And we certainly can’t control the events of tomorrow. The following is a story written by Kara: Tears ran down my face as I called my mom from the parking lot during my first semester of law school in California. I was so overwhelmed and thoughts of doubt kept racing through my mind: What had I gotten myself into? I’m not smart enough to be here. Maybe I should just pack my bags and move back to Kansas. I’m in over my head. There’s no way I’m going to be able to learn all of this… My mom wasn’t going to let me drown myself in negative thoughts, but she also didn’t let me have a pity party. She told me there was a reason that I’d been accepted to that school - I earned my spot just like everyone else. However, if I didn’t start believing in myself, all of that hard work that got me there was for nothing. She was right. Life isn’t always going to be easy, people aren’t always going to be there to pick me up when I waver or fall, but one thing I always have is myself. In that moment, I knew that the first step to getting through and excelling in my new journey was choosing to think positively and believe in myself. I’ll be honest, it wasn’t easy. Even now, I still have self-doubt from time to time. I still overthink things and question my own abilities. Though through all those challenges I've faced, I've found happiness. We all know that life has a way of showing us some real hills and valleys. Sometimes things are great and we're on top of the world - other times, they're incredibly hard and we're just looking for a way back up. Maybe it's the loss of a loved one at a completely unexpected time, or chronic pain that you've been living with for so long now that your life feels defined by it. Maybe it's PTSD from experiences that have shaped who you've become as a person or a wonderful relationship that ended badly and you can not figure out why. Maybe it's the anxiety of not knowing what's next that's making you feel like a deer in headlights every waking moment. Whatever the case might be, I made this ZOX for you. One of the hardest questions we keep trying to answer after a traumatic experience is why. Why me? Why now? I named this ZOX and wrote the card with it for exactly those moments. It's your armor for the days when you're struggling to put things together - to understand what's going on. I believe there is one thing in struggles we face that will always be true: Your happiness is worth fighting for, no matter the emotions that come in and try to take that away.
