Most people don't know this but ZOX was actually run out of my bedroom in Arizona for the first year we were around. Brandon slept in my closet and helped me with design, development and community outreach at a small desk we had set up. Jordan handled production and fulfilled orders out of a tiny one-room office we sublet in Michigan each day after school. To say what we did was bold is an understatement - it, for all intents and purposes, was crazy.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p2\"\u003eAt the end of the day though, I believe that you have to be bold (and a bit crazy) if you want to incite true change. Who you are is beautiful, love who you are. But it can be really hard to take those words to heart, especially if you have depression or anxiety or any number of other hardships. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI struggled my entire childhood trying to like who I was, or at least that's what I thought I was doing. In actuality, I was trying to change who I was to fit what I thought was 'acceptable' and 'the likable person', without taking time to stop and learn about myself. It's such a shame too because who I am is a pretty great person. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eI met my husband when I was young, had a 'perfect' body, perfect hair, was on point with my fashion for the times, and so on. He didn't ask me out because I was pretty and trendy though. He asked me out because I had rescued a puppy with him, and he found out that I shared his love of helping animals. He loved me inside and out from the moment we met. I couldn't understand why he just.. adored me regardless of how wacky I was. I spent an hour debating with a friend about a plot twist in my favorite show, and he smiled and enjoyed every second of it. I woke up in the middle of the night with a sudden bout of insane inspiration, and he helped me get untangled from bed and to the drafting table without getting myself injured.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eEvery day he kisses me and tells me I am beautiful, and his eyes mean it. I have gray hairs, wrinkles in the corners of my eyes, and rarely get out of my pajamas. I'm usually covered in splashes of paint and followed by half the animals in my house, and he still sees me as beautiful as the day we met. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt took me a long time to embrace who I was. He helped me, my kids helped me, my dad helped me... but in the end, I was the one who had to stop and really evaluate how I felt about myself and why I didn't like myself. It was kind of funny to realize that who I was, was someone I liked. Someone I would want to be friends with. It’s incredible seeing how effortlessly they ride each wave, moving along with the rhythm of the water. They are so in control of the board, their bodies, and their future at that moment. Every movement is intentional and timed perfectly in order to keep them on their feet. I’m in awe of how fearless surfers are. No matter the sharks or sea life, no matter the size of the wave, they’re still dedicated to their sport, that the rest just doesn’t faze them. However, that’s only one side of the beach. On the other side of the beach are the beginners. Watching the beginners surf is like watching a child learn to walk. A toddler may waddle a few steps and then fall, while a surfer may be able to stand up on their board for a couple of seconds before they end up right back where they started, in the water. With each wipeout, I cringe a little bit and then wait to see if they’ll give up or if they choose to get right back on. What I respect about beginner surfers is that I always see them get back on. No matter how many times they get knocked off or tousled in a wave they turn around and start paddling out to catch the next one. Even when we think someone may have it all together, the majority of the time they don’t. Even the most experienced surfers wipe out. On the contrary, we may feel that as beginners we are struggling and wonder if we’ll ever be like the pros. Yet we have to remind ourselves that every pro started as a beginner. Life is so much like surfing. We are all on different paths, with different experience levels so we cannot compare ourselves to one another. We are all surfing our own waves, some are bigger and more daunting, some are choppy and uncertain, some waves are easy and predictable. If you didn't know, Oma means grandmother in German. Although I called her by a German name because that was the heritage of my grandfather, she was very much Italian. She was loud, outspoken, and let everyone know exactly what she was thinking. She loved to cook and I never left her home hungry. Being the youngest of all the grandchildren, I would be lying if I said I didn't get some special treatment. She loved me with every ounce of her being. When I was little, I remember the countless hours she would play Barbie dolls with me, read me bedtime stories when I would spend the night, and always hold me in her arms as we rocked in the big green rocking chair in her family room. There is something so special about being a little kid and spending time with your grandparents. Over the years, I grew up, but she stayed the same silly, loving Oma that I adored and would even try to fit me in her lap even though I had far surpassed the age and size of being able to rock in that rocking chair with her.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eThe summer before the 8th grade was one of the hardest I had experienced. After fighting breast cancer as best as she could and enduring chemotherapy, the doctors shared with our family that they didn't believe my Oma would make it much longer. Cousins, aunts, uncles, and relatives all gathered around her during this time. We stood by her on the good days and reminisced about all the great times we’ve had and we stood by her on the hard days when did everything we could to comfort her. It’s heartbreaking to see how cancer can transform someone into a completely different person. Her beautiful brown, curly hair, was now gone. The lively Oma, who used to sing and dance in the kitchen, now lay still in her bed, too weak to move on her own. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eIn July of that summer, she took her last breath. When you’re young, sometimes it can be hard to understand these situations. All I felt was pain and sadness and confusion as to why I didn't get to grow up with her in my life. It is hard to look past our own grievances in times of hurt, but as I grew up I looked at the situation from her perspective. I realized how strong she was. How during that time she was in an incredible amount of pain, yet never complained. How she must have been fearful to leave her own family, yet never wept. How her identity was stripped from her and not once did she take pity on herself. Through the hardest time in her life she was her strongest and her beauty shone the brightest. Although breast cancer was the last chapter of her story, it did not define her. She did not allow it to drive out all the light and love she experienced throughout her life. We ended up leaving twenty-four hours later, on Sunday night, to drive to Laughlin, Nevada. We stayed the night in a hotel and the next morning we drove out to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Once we got there, we took a bus to the head of the South Kaibab Trail. I was excited to be there since I had never visited the Grand Canyon before. My friend had heard that the “Ooh-Aah Point” on the Kaibab Trail was one of the best places to catch an amazing view that would have you saying “ooh and aah”, hence the name. The trip down the trail wasn’t too difficult, although trying to avoid the donkey droppings was a bit challenging. Once we made it to the “Ooh-Aah Point” we saw the amazing view that everyone had spoken of. It completely took my breath away. We ended up sitting there for a while just breathing in the air, gazing out on the vastness of it all. The lack of other hikers on the trail made for a very peaceful experience just feeling the wind pass by, while we soaked it all in. It was a nice break from the busy city and speeding cars that so often fill our everyday life. Even though it was only one day, we made memories that will last for the rest of our lives. Sometimes you just have to say yes, jump in the car or hop on a plane, and see where it takes you. So, unfortunately, I grew up only seeing a version of him affected by this horrible disease. On the outside, he still smiled and loved, yet on the inside I know it was utter chaos for him. Over the 8 years he battled Alzheimer's, I watched as he went from forgetful to not being able to speak at all. He could no longer recognize close family and friends or turn his thoughts into sentences, besides the occasional sound or word. It was agonizing witnessing this happen to him so slowly and having absolutely no chance at stopping it. I have always resented this disease as it hurt that the rest of my family had memories of what he was like without it, yet I never would. They would tell me that he was a kind man, who cared for others and loved me so much, yet I yearned to experience that for myself. I wanted to be able to hear about his life, his childhood, his stories. I wanted to make him proud as I grew up and have him involved in all the major milestones in my life. There was so much more to my story with him that I never got the chance to experience. Towards the end of his life, things began to take a turn for the worse, and we knew it was time to say our goodbyes. As I walked into his room for what would be the last time, I was greeted by the sweetest words of “hi honey” ever so clearly, the most I had heard him speak in while. Those were his last words before he passed away, coincidentally the day before my birthday. To me, those two words were exactly what I needed and he knew that. I may not have other memories of my time with him when he was well, but even in the final moments of his fight, he left me with a sign to remind me of his love for me, that he knew me, even if his brain did not remember, his heart most certainly did. \u003c\/span\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eI only hope that one day, there will be no more pain brought on by this disease and a cure can be found.
