I had gone for an errand and decided to stop off at a drive-through coffee shop to grab a midday coffee. After I ordered, I patiently waited behind a couple of other cars to reach the window to pay. When I finally reached the window, instead of the person reminding me of how much I owed, to my surprise, I was told that my coffee had already been paid for by the car in front of me. I was so surprised I really didn't know what to say or do. The person at the window suggested maybe paying it forward and buying the drink of the person who was waiting in line behind me. I thought was a great idea, so I did, in hopes that it might make their day a little brighter too. As I drove home, with a smile on my face I began to think about how such a little gesture can change the whole pace of someone's day. The person who paid for my drink was a complete stranger, yet chose to do something kind for someone without having any motivation other than kindness and love. I now realize how important it is to act out of love because when you do, it creates a ripple effect that can change lives. Whether it be for a stranger or a loved one, think about ways in which you can make a difference in someone else’s life right now by spreading love. She and her husband are an incredibly sweet elderly couple that has lived in my neighborhood since I was a little kid. While we were catching up, she had mentioned how her husband had recently fallen and his hip replacement had become dislocated. It was a big ordeal as he couldn't get up and since she wasn't able to lift him they had to call 911 and go to the hospital. She told me that after they returned from the hospital which ended up being a few days longer than they expected, they found that someone had decided to pick up their mail each day and bring their trash cans out on trash day. She found out that the person who had shown this act of kindness was a fellow neighbor of ours who had noticed they hadn't been home in a few days and decided to help out. Even though he was a neighbor of ours, she had not spoken much to him before and was touched that he took care of their home without even being asked. I could see how that act of kindness meant so much to her at a time when she really needed it. After hearing her story it made me think about how seeing someone else’s act of kindness makes you want to be a better person. Kindness is truly contagious, for when we see others happy it makes us happy and causes us to want to spread that joy on to someone else. It was a great reminder that acts of kindness can come from anyone, at any time, for any reason! There are no rules to how to be kind, simply acting from your heart is enough to make someone's day.
