While we worried about our home burning down, the spouses and children of firefighters wondered if their family members would make it home. While we stayed far away from the fires in a comfortable hotel, firefighters fought tirelessly taking naps on the ground when they had a moment to spare. My friend was able to return home early on in the fires and sent me a picture at the grocery store of soot-covered firefighters that looked like they hadn’t slept for days—that image is forever etched in my mind. Thank you to every firefighter that runs in, when we are running out. When I was a junior in high school, I received a call from my Dad while I was on the way over to a friend’s house.  My grandpa had suffered a heart aneurysm while mowing the lawn.  My grandma called 911.   The paramedics arrived and did what they could, but unfortunately, he passed away in the back of the ambulance on the way to the hospital. It sent shockwaves through our family. One minute everything was great and the next a loved one was gone. That day, I gained a new respect for those men and women. Day in and day out, their job is to go from one near death situation to another, risking everything for a complete stranger. The amount of strength that takes both mentally and physically is absolutely amazing to me. People who are going through immense struggles that I know need a word of encouragement like this to give them a hug - to remind them that they're loved and we're counting on them to make it through. Like 'Today I Will Not Worry' and 'You're Going To Be Okay', this ZOX was made for struggles all of us will endure at one time or another - the ones that take time to heal. \n\u003cdiv\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003c\/div\u003e\n\u003cdiv\u003eWe all know that life has a way of showing us some real hills and valleys. Sometimes things are great and we're on top of the world - other times, they're incredibly hard and we're just looking for a way back up. Maybe it's the loss of a loved one at a completely unexpected time, or chronic pain that you've been living with for so long now that your life feels defined by it. Maybe it's PTSD from experiences that have shaped who you've become as a person or a wonderful relationship that ended badly and you can not figure out why. Maybe it's the anxiety of not knowing what's next that's making you feel like a deer in headlights every waking moment. But is there only value in doing and not in being? I didn't have the words to describe what I wanted to fight this constant fear of not doing enough. But Catch Your Breath is exactly what I needed to hear. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eYou don’t need to push yourself past the limits just to achieve your goals. You merely being there without expectations of some deadline or chore is enough. A runner doesn't keep going until they collapse, so why should we work ourselves to the bone without a true break. I've loved seeing everyone's responses to our previous Spotlight releases, and I can assure you that we have another special one for you today.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFirst, though, I'd like to dive into something all of us have experienced – maybe only as children, or perhaps still to this day: the fear of the dark.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFor the longest time growing up, I would fall asleep with the TV on to comfort me from whatever lurked in the dark, ominous corners of my bedroom. Then, within more recent years, I adopted the new tactic of having a light-up air freshener so I had a splash of light without illuminating my entire room. You see – I was trying to conquer my fear of the dark by slowly easing my way out of having a crutch, the sources of light.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI can happily admit that I now sleep with an eye mask to keep out the light completely! Talk about progress, huh?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBut that doesn't mean I've conquered my fear of the dark. It sounds childish to admit, \"yeah, please leave the lights on – I'm scared of the dark,\" but that's only because society isolated it to a fear only children struggle with.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eThe Manifestation of Nyctophobia in Real \u003cem\u003eAdult\u003c\/em\u003e Life\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cblockquote\u003e\n\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/nyctophobia\"\u003eNyctophobia\u003c\/a\u003e: the extreme fear of night or darkness that can cause intense symptoms of anxiety and depression\u003c\/blockquote\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYour fear of the dark may not be debilitating; however, it \u003cem\u003ecan\u003c\/em\u003e place itself in different areas of your life. For example, I can sleep without the lights on, but I will start to panic if I'm stuck outside when it's cloudy, and there's no moonlight or artificial light to be found.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFearing the night or darkness comes from \u003cem\u003e\u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/nyctophobia\"\u003ethe fear of not being able to see what's around you\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBeing in the dark is not confined to physical situations. In fact, read the previous sentence once more.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMetaphorically speaking, doesn't it get frustrating not to know what's happening around us or what will happen?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThink about it. Couldn't the fear of the dark be comparable to the fear of the unknown?\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNow, I don't mean to discount the fear of the dark for adults. It's real – trust me, I still experience it, too.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHowever, I would like to draw your attention to how nyctophobia can manifest itself in our lives by spreading into other areas—specifically, anxiety about the future.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen we feel that we're left out of things, we're in the dark, right? That fear can grow into something too tangible for us to handle by having a night light, unfortunately.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHowever, we can relinquish our anxiety by acknowledging that things are out of our control – and admitting that's okay.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cblockquote\u003eThe more you stay away from a feared object or situation, such as refusing to go to the black basement at all costs, the more likely you are to maintain [your] phobia. – \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.womenshealthmag.com\/health\/a28911301\/afraid-if-the-dark\/\"\u003eElizabeth Bacharach\u003c\/a\u003e\n\u003c\/blockquote\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe longer we avoid facing our fears, the longer they have control over us. But you can make conscious steps to release its hold on you.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eMoving Past Fear\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHow can we overcome a fear of something that has yet to happen? It seems impossible, but nothing is impossible. Most fears we can confront, like a fear of spiders or heights, but the unknown is a little trickier to face.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt comes down to \u003cstrong\u003e\u003cem\u003erelinquishing control.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe reason most of us fear the unknown is because we have no control over what happens next. We're creatures of habit – we like to know what we're going to be involved in next. So it's a natural desire to have our hands on whatever could affect us.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThus, we must understand that we won't always have control over everything. Life is full of unpredictability, and there's no doubt that anxiety will arise in certain situations. Anxiety becomes more prevalent in our mental health, depending on \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/science-choice\/202012\/how-fear-the-unknown-influences-decision-making\"\u003ehow we perceive, interpret, and respond to uncertain situations.\u003c\/a\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eQuestions starting with \"what if\" take root in our minds and divert our thoughts to the negative, fear-inducing ideas that introduce stress over a previously innocent situation.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOnce we \u003cstrong\u003eperceive\u003c\/strong\u003e that the situation is out of our control, \u003cstrong\u003einterpret\u003c\/strong\u003e it as an okay occurrence (meaning: \"I don't know what's going to happen, but I'm at peace with it\"), \u003cem\u003ethen\u003c\/em\u003e we can \u003cstrong\u003erespond\u003c\/strong\u003e in a more positive light, instead of drowning in our fear of the unknown.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLittle steps are necessary to a big finale.
